Fall + Pumpkins = Happiness

With the arrival of October, I feel fall is officially here; although the weather outside is still too warm for fall in my opinion. But we are thinking positively for falling temperatures and offering fall-inspired goodies–from drinks to baked goods. Today, the Sugar Cookies decided to get decked out for fall and are adorned with green icing and a candy corn pumpkin–a sure recipe for happiness!

For drinks, we have Pumpkin Pie and Gingerbread flavor for lattes and cappuccinos. Since it’s still warm outside, we decided to experiment with our Spiced Chai mix. We added some Pumpkin Pie Sauce to make a Frozen Pumpkin Pie Chai drink. It tastes like a pumpkin pie shake. Words simply can’t describe the deliciousness….mmmmmmm will have to do.

If at First You Don’t Succeed…

The Mocha Muffin you see in the picture is the result of my belief in the motto “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!” Sadly, the first muffins I mixed up this morning are resting in the bottom of the kitchen trashcan. They didn’t even make it to the oven. When I scooped the 10th muffin into its liner,  I came to the awful realization that I had forgotten to add sugar to the batter! The thought of sugar-free muffins–unintentionally sugar-free–didn’t sound too appetizing to me.

So, out came a clean mixing bowl, 2 more eggs, flour, sugar, & cocoa, along with the rest of the ingredients (ALL of them this time) to make another dozen muffins.  I think they turned out just right on my 2nd try.

My daughter took one with her on the way to school; another customer bought one on his way back to work after lunch, and one customer lingered at the display case for several minutes before finally choosing the Mocha Muffin over the other baked goods–only to come back 30 minutes later for a second one! This leads me to believe that I can only fail if I give up when I make a mistake.

Cafe Latte or Cappuccino?

Before we started making coffee drinks at HeBrews, I never knew the difference between a cafe latte and a cappuccino. I don’t remember the first time I ordered an espresso-based coffee drink, but I probably ordered the same drink that the person I was with ordered. I tend to be indecisive (ask Brian and he’ll gladly tell you what restaurant-ordering has been like for the past 29 years), so it was to the benefit of all those behind me in line that I ordered in copycat fashion.

I have since learned from different sources that a cafe latte is  espresso and steamed milk with a small amount of foam on top, and a cappuccino is equal parts espresso, steamed milk and foam. Simply put, the cafe latte is milkier than its cousin, the cappuccino!

The majority of HeBrews’ coffee drinkers order cafe lattes with flavored syrup. Caramel and vanilla are consistent favorites at HeBrews, but if you allow Cafe Mocha to join in the race, it comes out on top more days than not.

I’ve come to believe that, in my case, the art of mastering the espresso machine’s frothing wand–key in the process of cafe latte and cappuccino making– is going to be a lifelong process. But hopefully, while I’m on my journey to frothing-mastery, customers are enjoying their choice of cafe lattes and cappuccinos!

HeBrews’ Meeting Space

Are you currently in the midst of planning a wedding shower, business meeting, or family gathering? If so, consider HeBrews as your next meeting place!

One of the deciding factors regarding our recent change in weekday business hours  (7am – 2pm) is directly related to people taking advantage of the meeting space at HeBrews during the evening. It’s becoming more and more common for us to host groups here a few nights each week, and with people getting back into the swing of things during the school year, the opportunities to serve people at night are increasing.

HeBrews has two spaces available–the seating area in HeBrews and The Gallery. Both rooms have projectors, speakers, and wi-fi to meet technology needs, and tables and chairs are available to configure for meetings, dinners, showers, and other types of gatherings.

Some guests request that we make sandwiches, drinks and baked goods, and we are happy to do so with advanced notice; however, some people bring their own refreshments, and that’s fine too! We don’t charge a room rental fee, but we happily accept donations to Church on the Square!

Our fall calendar is beginning to fill up, so give us a call and get your next event lined up!

New Fall Hours

It might not officially be fall on the calendar, but school buses are running and kids are back in school, so we decided it was time to adjust our hours here at HeBrews.

Starting Wednesday, August 17, we’re going to open at 7am in the morning (one hour earlier) and close at 2pm in the afternoon during the week. We look forward to seeing our early-morning-coffee-drinking-customers on their way to work.  We’ll happily serve hot chocolate, chai tea, soft drinks & fruit smoothies, too! We can’t think of a better way to start the day than sipping a great beverage made just the way you like it!

We’re adjusting our Saturday hours too. We’ll still be open for 3 hours, but we’re opening one hour earlier. The new Saturday hours are 8am – 11am, so come on down for a great breakfast in a relaxing atmosphere! We’d love to serve you.

Some Like it Hot–Coffee, That Is

I am always surprised when it’s over 100 degrees outside and someone comes in and orders a hot coffee. This morning alone we made several Cafe Mochas, 1 Vanilla Cappuccino, 2 Americanos, and a dozen or so cups of coffee–all hot! Several people have told us that drinking a hot beverage in the heat cools them down. During college, Brian worked outside and several of his co-workers made the same claim– bringing a thermos of home-brewed coffee to drink throughout the day.

I did a search on the Internet and found that people have been asking this same question for a long time, and the consensus seems to be that a hot beverage will make you feel cooler initially because it makes you sweat, and sweat cools you off as it evaporates; however, the overall effect of the hot beverage  is that it eventually warms you up.

I can not say whether this explanation is based on scientific fact from the little research I’ve done here,  and even if it is a proven fact, people are still going to disagree on how a hot beverage affects them during hot weather. As a barista at HeBrews, I will continue to serve up hot drinks to customers who order their favorite beverage throughout the summer time. As the saying goes, “Some like it hot!”

The Creamy Ice-presso

Loving coffee in the summertime can be challenging. Coffee still  tastes great, but it can make you sweat when you’re already sweaty from the 100 degree temperature + humidity! Ugh!

At HeBrews, we serve frozen, blended coffee drinks, iced mochas and cafe lattes, but we’ve recently discovered another way to enjoyBree and Me enjoying a creamy ice-presso the delightful taste of freshly brewed espresso in the summertime. We’re calling it the Creamy Ice-presso and it’s a perfect sipping drink. Whereas my hot coffee drinks always cool off before I can finish them, this drink lasts all morning. My daughter, Bree, and I are happily sipping our creamy ice-pressos this morning in the picture.

This drink is a combination of espresso, half-n-half and ice. We choose to add flavored syrup too, but adding a flavor is entirely up to you. English toffee is a favorite with customers who have ordered it at HeBrews.  We have many flavors to choose from, like vanilla, hazelnut, caramel, and Irish creme to name a few. My favorite is sugar-free white chocolate with a dash of coconut.
