We have a new sandwich at HeBrews called the Downtown Reuben. A few people had mentioned the idea of a Reuben sandwich this past year, which always made me smile inside. Reuben sandwiches remind me of some of the yummiest lunches my mom and I shared during the summer months when she was out of school. It was our tradition to make 3 sandwiches on our trusty General Electric grilled cheese maker. One whole sandwich each and then we split the third one because eating two whole sandwiches would have been unladylike!
We fix our Downtown Reuben on marbled rye, with corned beef, swiss cheese, sauerkraut (some people turn their noses up at this ingredient), and thousand island dressing. We serve it warm on toasted or warmed bread. The sandwich debuted last week and has been gaining in popularity. Our theory is the Reuben is a favorite of those who like sauerkraut, although yesterday we made it 1 time without the kraut. So, maybe the Downtown Reuben can be a sandwich for everyone!
Come on in out of the summer heat and give the Downtown Reuben a try! We think you’ll be glad you did.
