Not only is the sun shining outside today, it’s shining inside HeBrews too! A friend of ours had three vases of bright yellow jonquils waiting at Old School Bagel in Stillwater yesterday morning when Brian arrived to pick up our daily order. It was such a wonderful and thoughtful surprise. We’ve placed the vases strategically on tables around the shop for customers to enjoy. They’ve been here two days and haven’t yet stopped smiling their sunshiney faces around the room.
Jonquils and Daffodils have to be one of my favorite flowers. I think it’s because they bloom every year without fail. Besides being bright and cheerful, they are definitely low maintenance–my gardening style for sure. At our house in Stillwater, we had transplanted numerous bulbs from my parent’s house over the years. Even now, they continue to show up in the circle drive, Brian’s shade garden in back of the house, and the front yard around the oak trees.
Some years they bloom profusely, depending on rainfall and temperatures. Other years, not so much. But even in the sparse years we could be guaranteed to see the blooms poking their heads up–usually in February–when we were certain it was too cold for flowers to survive. But snow and cold weather never keep these guys in the ground. Even if they’re covered with snow, once it melts their yellowy cheerfulness bounces right back.
Now that’s something to think about–bouncing back cheerfully after a storm passes. Definitely something to keep in mind. In the meantime, these friendly yellow flowers will be my constant reminder to do just that.
